The decision to establish the Second Front in Western Europe was made in Washington in May 1943 at a conference codenamed Trident. At that time, the British and the US leaders decided to launch an invasion of France in the summer of 1944. After months of preparation and planning, French Normandy was chosen as the most favourable location for the allied landing. On 6 June 1944, the largest landing operation in the history began – the beaches of Normandy became a huge battlefield.
