The Crimean War ended with the defeat of Russia. The war exposed Moscow’s weakness and backwardness in relation to the Western European powers. In view of Russia’s efforts to take control of the entire Black Sea basin, their defeat in the Crimean War and the subsequent peace treaty were especially humiliating for her.

Was the sacrifice of the thousands of soldiers worth it? Today, the futile loss of life and the scale of human misery during the Crimean War is beyond our understanding. But the war itself shocked European societies and initiated the process leading to a better understanding of human suffering.
